Frequently Asked Questions About

Crime and Crime Research

What is Crime Data?

Crime data is a large amount of information about all the crimes that occur in a specific area.  This data could include a crime ID, police case number, date and time, location (block, x and y coordinates, district, etc.), type of crime, and a description of the crime (Chicago Data Portal).

What is Crime Visualization?

Crime data can be processed and visualized in a way that allows people to see where crime is, when most crimes are committed, where crime hotspots are, what type of crime is most common, etc.  These factors change the way policymakers deal with crime, creating change and reformation to where police stations are located and where to conduct effective crime mitigation programs, such as restorative justice programs.  Crime visualization takes crime data and puts it into an algorithm, making it easier for people to see and quickly analyze crime rates in a specific location.

What if I am not satisfied with Crime Analysis and Resources?

Many communities use criminal data to create simple visualizations, maps, that policy makers could use to see what is happening around them.  These visualizations take law enforcement reports and visualize them on a map to make it easier to see what types of crime is occurring.  If this website does not satify your needs you could try looking for your city's crime map and resources they might have on their websites.
